Since the Republic of Cape Verde gained independence, Germany has provided 100 million euros to the country under a financial and technical cooperation. Germany also contributes a large share of multilateral aid and Cape Verde has been one of the top recipients of German development cooperation.

These two nations remain close in cooperation, especially in the following areas: renewable energy, combating drug trafficking, oceanography and seaports. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection of Germany are actively involved in research cooperation with Cape Verde (marine research, oceanography, climate monitoring and climate protection, protecting West African fishing grounds).
